Q: Are any FURminator products included in the pet food recalls?
A: No. Recently, imported wheat gluten from China has been associated with a countrywide recall of pet food made by Menu Foods in Canada. FURminator Inc. would like to reassure our customers that FURminator deShedding Dog Treats are safe and not part of the recent pet food recall.
The wheat gluten used in the treats is only produced and manufactured in the United States and is produced by standards classified as food grade. None of the wheat gluten used in the FURminator deShedding Treats is imported. The FURminator deShedding Dog Treats are made in the United States. Furthermore, the chemicals melamine and aminopterin, alleged causes of the deaths and illness of pets who consumed the food made with the contaminated wheat gluten, are not used in the production of the deShedding dog treats or even allowed for such applications in the United States.
The FURminator deShedding Dog Treats are produced under strict FDA and American Institute of Baking guidelines. Each phase of production, from raw materials to the finished product, is tested and great measures are taken to ensure the highest quality treats are produced. We, at FURminator Inc., love our pets as much as you do and strive to produce only premium, high quality products.

Q: How often should the tool be used?
A: The tool is fine to use every day, but really not necessary. With most breeds, using the tool once or twice a week for 10-20 minutes each session will reduce shedding up to 90 percent.
Q: How often should the deShedding shampoo and deShedding solution be used?
A: We recommend using the shampoo and solution every month if necessary. The shampoo and solution are hypoallergenic and non-drying, which means you can use the products more often if necessary.
Q: How often should the waterless deShedding shampoo and conditioner be used?
A: The waterless deShedding shampoo and conditioner can be used as often as necessary. The non-drying formula will not dry out your pet’s coat with daily use.
Q: Does the FURminator deShedding Tool cut the hair?
A: No, the FURminator deShedding Tool does not cut or damage the coat, but rather pushes through the topcoat to remove the dead undercoat and loose hair.
Q: Does the deShedding tool help prevent hairballs in cats?
A: The FURminator deShedding Tool was nominated by Tufts University School of Veterinarian Medicine’s newsletter as the number one product to reduce hairballs in cats. Using the FURminator deShedding Tool on a regular basis, as well as the cat shampoo will help reduce shedding, thus reducing the amount of hair your cat ingests.
Q: Are the products only for use on dogs and cats?
A: FURminator Inc. has recently introduced an equine tool with a 5 inch edge. The equine tool helps to remove the “winter coat” faster helping the horse to stay cool in the summer. Using the deShedding tool on horses can also stimulate circulation and hair growth. The tools may also be used on rabbits, ferrets and cattle.
Q: Do I ever need to sharpen or replace the deShedding edge?
A: The average consumer should not have to replace the deShedding edge for the lifetime of the pet. We always advise to keep the protective cover on the deShedding edge at all times when not in use. The small blue and purple cat deShedding tools do not have replaceable edges. The medium, large and equine deShedding tools do have replaceable edges.
Q: Does the deShedding Tool work without using the FURminator deShedding Shampoo and Solution?
A: Yes, however the tool is more effective if you use the deShedding shampoo and deShedding solution or the waterless shampoo and conditioner.
Q: Do the shampoos, solution and conditioners contain natural ingredients?
A: The ingredients are natural, non-drying and hypoallergenic.
• The deShedding shampoo contains: Coconut base, hydrolyzed wheat protein, calendula extract, hydrolyzed oat protein, kava extract, vitamin E, Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, chamomile extract, aloe vera, carica papaya extract and malva sylvestris extract.
• The deShedding solution contains: Kava extract, hydrolyzed wheat protein, vitamin A, Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids, hydrolyzed oat protein, vitamin E, vitamin B5 and chamomile extract.
• The cat shampoo and conditioner contains: Palm and coconut base, hydrolyzed wheat protein, aloe vera, Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids, almond oil, wheat germ oil, vitamin A and vitamin E.
• The waterless shampoo and conditioner for dogs and cats and the waterless shampoo and conditioner for cats contain: Coconut base cleaners, glycerin, hydrolyzed collagen protein, safflower oil, Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids, vitamin E.
Q: How often should the Shed-Less Treatment be performed?
A: We recommend having the entire Shed-Less Treatment performed on your pet every 4-6 weeks. You may need to use the tool on your pet’s coat between treatments during heavy shedding seasons.
Q: Can the FURminator deShedding Tool be used in the winter or colder months?
A: Since the FURminator deShedding Tool only removes the coat that has already shed from your dog, the tool is fine to use in the winter. You will most likely not have to use the tool as often as you would during heavy shedding months.
Q: Can the FURminator deShedding Tool be used on terriers?
A: The FURminator deShedding Tool works great on terriers. The deShedding tool gently removes the undercoat and loose hair without cutting or damaging the topcoat. Clipping terrier coats “softens” the coat texture, an undesired characteristic. Using the FURminator deShedding Tool leaves the coarse, desired topcoat. When used on a regular basis, the FURminator deShedding Tool can even help restore the natural color of your dog’s coat, where clippers have been used.
If you typically hand strip your dog, you can use the FURminator deShedding Tool first to remove the loose coat and then finish with hand stripping to achieve the desired look. The deShedding tool will not replace hand stripping, but will help with the process.
Q: Can the FURminator deShedding Tool be used to remove mats or tangles?
A: The FURminator Tool is not to be used to remove mats or tangles. The pet’s coat should be completely free of any mats or tangles before using the tool. We always recommend reading the tool instructions before each use.
Q: Does the FURminator deShedding Tool come with instructions?
A: Yes, the deShedding tool instructions are listed on the inside of the package insert. The deShedding tool instructions are also listed below.
FURminator deShedding Tool directions for use
1. Be sure your dog or cat has a clean coat that is COMPLETELY DRY ... for best results, we recommend using the FURminator deShedding Tool immediately after washing and drying your dog or cat.
2. Because the FURminator deShedding Tool will extract an abundance of hair, position your dog or cat in an area that is easy to sweep or vacuum.
3. With the edge and teeth of the deShedding tool angled toward the coat of your dog or cat, GENTLY pull the tool across the coat in the direction of the pet's hair growth. Use the deShedding tool like a hair brush and stroke across, up and away from your pet's skin. Use long, gentle strokes with the deShedding tool and avoid repeated strokes in the same area. Be extra careful near the pet's most sensitive areas (stomach, legs, genitals and anus). DO NOT APPLY TOO MUCH WEIGHT OR DOWNWARD PRESSURE as you comb through the pet's coat. Deep or rough brushing can cause the pet's skin to become red and irritated, and pet's with sensitive skin may suffer brush burns even with light combing. If you notice any redness or irritation on your pet's skin, immediately stop using the deShedding tool.
Before using the deShedding tool, perform a COMPLETE physical inspection of your dog or cat and identify any tangles or matting in their hair or coat ... if your dog or cat has any tangles or matting in their hair or coat, DO NOT USE the FURminator deShedding Tool. Take your pet to a certified pet grooming salon for professional treatment. Also perform a COMPLETE physical inspection of your dog or cat and identify any sores, cuts, bruises, abrasions or skin conditions ... your pet's coat can hide existing sores, cuts, bruises, abrasions or skin conditions, so be sure to perform a thorough inspection on your dog or cat. If your dog or cat has any sores, cuts, bruises, abrasions or skin conditions, DO NOT USE the FURminator deShedding Tool. Take your pet to a veterinarian for professional treatment. The time required to use the FURminator deShedding Tool on your dog or cat will vary based on the breed of your pet and condition of its coat. Excessive shedding may be caused by a pet's health and diet and should be discussed with a veterinarian. The FURminator deShedding Tool is designed to be performed ONLY on "shedding" breeds of dogs and cats. The FURminator deShedding Tool should NOT be performed on any other pet or on non-shedding breeds of dogs and cats. Consult a veterinarian to determine if your dog or cat is considered a shedding or non-shedding breed.
The FURminator professional deShedding Tool has a fine toothed precision deShedding edge that can be sharpened and great care should be taken to protect the teeth. Replace the edge cover when not in use. FURminator Inc. does not guarantee against broken or bent teeth on the deShedding edge.
